We certainly think pollution insurance is “a must” for refineries and any business with emissions; however, pollution liability isn’t just assigned to these industries anymore. It’s steadily creeping into nearly every type of construction, installation and product manufacturing business, and regulations and statutes are expanding environmental liability exposure.

Pollution coverage goes by many names. In general, this coverage can be described in two ways:

  • Site Pollution Liability Coverage (which may also be referred to as pollution legal liability or environmental impairment liability)


  • This kind of policy would cover cleanup and other remediation costs as well as bodily injury and property claims. It would most often be used by a business with a manufacturing site.

  • Contractor Pollution Liability Coverage


  • Any contractor working in mold or asbestos abatement needs to be aware of exposure to pollution claims. Often, a general contractor does not even realize its exposure until it’s too late—for example, coming across mold or asbestos in the course of construction or dealing with damage from an incident involving a sewer line.

It is important to note that pollution is a common exclusion under a commercial general liability policy. If your business is at risk for water, air, soil or any other type of pollution incident, discuss a pollution policy or an endorsement with .
